ABOUT US

By Faith Orphans Center is Affiliated With Cross Point Church, Newport, RI

When Jesus saw the multitudes of hurting people all around Him, the Scriptures say “He was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd." (Matthew 9:36, KJV)

The Center

By Faith Orphans Centre is based at Kichaka Simba, Lukore location of Kwale County, via Mombasa. It is approximately 30 miles south of  Mombasa, the second largest city in Kenya. In this rural villages, we have all weather roads that are difficult to navigate especially during rainy seasons. Even on dry seasons, driving in this part of the world is not for the faint-hearted.

The Center is surrounded by numerous villages which include Kichaka Simba, Mavombe, Mkanda, Lukore,  Mangawani, and Kibuyuni. These villages are characterized by inadequate infrastructure, squalid housing structures, abject poverty, unemployment, illiteracy, and many tropical diseases such as malaria.

The hardest hit and affected by these conditions are the children. The Center takes care of children who have been orphaned by providing free education, food, clothing, healthcare, individual skills enhancement and spiritual support to the children.  Counseling is an integral aspect of the services provided at the Center, especially to traumatized children who have lost their parents or who have a history of physical and/or sexual abuse. The widows and the grannies who mainly live with these children are also being supported with food, clothing, healthcare and self-sustainable activities. The only means of earning a living in these villages is small-scale farming. And when the parents of these children passed on from various deceases they were left with old grant parents who are too old to make any meaningful farming activities.

The Director of the Center, Ms. Rhoda Kiilu, has seen it all. Countless are the times she has attended burials of parents of children now under her care. These disadvantaged children, some of whom are disabled, look up to her as their only hope. In turn she does not disappoint; for she is a woman of faith, faith in God and in His ability to take care of His children.

At By faith Orphans Center children still live at their homes and the center under the directions of Rhoda Kiilu coordinate the needs of the children.

History of the Center

Bernard S. Munge and his wife Joyce M. Munge currently stationed at Rhode Island, USA happens to come from this area. Bernard S. Munge is a professor at Salve Regina University where he teaches Chemistry while Joyce is a Registered Nurse. Rhoda kept on updating us on the development on the ground and we also traveled to Kenya to witness the situation first hand. Moved by mercy and compassion, in 2000 we decided to jump into these chaos and begin to help these children who had no else to turn to.  The plight of children whose parents had succumbed to various diseases was too much to bear for us. So, we decided to take action.

In the early days, we had only a few children and we would assist them using our personal savings but soon the number grew and stretched our resources to the limit. We then started looking for sponsors for the families and children with needs, most of who were afflicted by poverty. Getting sponsors for these children was a daunting task. Fortunately, over the years we have found faithful people who have come to the rescue of these children. Special thanks goes to mama Mary Warhle of CT for continued support. While we cannot individually thank each one of our sponsors here we would like to express our sincere gratitude to each one of you.

And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones in my name, I tell you the truth, he will certainly not lose his reward (Matthew 10:42). May the Lord God bless you abundantly from his great riches in glory!

However, the needs continue to increase with increasing number of children. As the children grow, educational needs have now become very challenging. We have seen highly talented kids come out of this Center. Currently we have some very brilliant kids at the local universities pursuing degrees in sciences, engineering and medicine. Our desire is to continue supporting them through college education so that we can empower them to be become not only financially independent but also to be able to give back to the society, making a difference in other peoples lives.
